The Shawnee Muskie Hunters, in conjunction with the University of Illinois Extension office in Murphysboro, the Jackson County 4-H, and the Illinois DNR, sponsored the annual Kid’s Free Fishing Day on June 26th, 2010 at Murphysboro State Park. John West of the Illinois DNR started the day with a fishing and boating safety seminar and a few fishing tips. The kids caught dozens of fish over a 2 hour period. Bluegill, bass, catfish and a few turtles were registered on the catch and release forms. Volunteers were kept busy giving instructions, passing out bait and water and keeping all the rods and reels in good working order. We gave away awards to the kid’s who caught the most inches of fish and the biggest fish for several age categories. At the end of the day, each child took home a nice bag of goodies that included their own bass lure which they could decorate to their choosing. John Wright and his executive chef partner (John’s son) did a phenomenal job providing lunch for the event. |
