General Membership Meeting Minutes -- Cabela’s Hazelwood
20 Feb, 2010
5 pm President Manuel Santa Cruz opened the meeting which was held in the conference center at the Cabela’s store in Hazelwood, Mo. Manuel welcomed all those attending and asked to have everyone introduce themselves. There were 19 people attending, 7 of which were new members, 4 of which were husbands and wives, and 1 visitor.
Attending were: Manuel Santa Cruz, Steve Burian, Walt Krause, Jerry Ford, Dan & Renee Johnson, Ken Ryder, Craig Moser, Jim Beaty, Brian Camerer, Randy Hilger, Bob & Diane Arisman, Ray Wheelock, John Boltener, Ron Czichos, Ray & Peggy Sternberg, and Matt Herries.
Manuel reported that preparations are underway for the annual Border Wars Chapter Challenge with the Pomme De Terre chapter scheduled March 20th on Lake Kinkaid. 12 boats are signed up so far but is expecting a lot more last minute entries. The “farm house” has been reserved for our group for both Friday and Saturday nights, anyone wishing to stay the night should contact either Manuel or Jim Beaty. Plans are to have a dinner Saturday evening after the tournament at the farm house. Craig Moser has volunteered to do the cooking and is seeking additional help and side dishes. The Pomme chapter has offered to once again supply the steaks for the dinner and may help with preparations.
Plans are for the tournament to launch from the Paul Ice launching ramps. Manuel will supply maps and directions to the Farm House.
Ken Ryder reported that he has numerous prospects signed up for the Guide for a Day events and will be needing volunteers and boats for both the spring and fall fundraisers.
Similarly, Manuel is chairing the Veterans Day event this fall and will need volunteers as well.
Walt Krause reported that the ice still covers the coves and launching ramps on Kinkaid. As the new secretary for the IMTT, he went on to speak of the IMTT rule changes, new membership requirements to fish sanctioned events, and about the new points system. There are four sanctioned IMTT tournaments being held on Lake Kinkaid this year, beginning with the first on March 13 & 14, two of which are our spring and fall tournaments, and the Championship tournament on Nov. 6 & 7.
Walt also congratulated last years IMTT points champion Jim Beaty who was in attendance at this meeting. Any questions which you might have about the IMTT changes please contact Walt.
For the first time, the IMTT will have a Youth Tournament Circuit this year with 3 tournaments scheduled, one of which will be on Kinkaid, and our chapters responsibility to sponsor. Dan Johnson is Chairman for this committee and project. Contact either Dan or Walt for information.
Craig Moser spoke primarily to our newest members about fishing the tournaments, that they are events to be fished for fun and not to take too seriously or be concerned about one’s abilities. Most of us fish these events for the fun of competing and to be with friends. Craig went on to mention the upcoming Members Only tournament May 22nd on Kinkaid... this will be the first year for this chapter event, there will be no charge to enter, and along with a meal afterwards there will be a traveling trophy presented to the winners. This is to be a day to fish with other members and just have a good time.
Craig also spoke of the raffle being held for a stay at the Young’s Wilderness Camp on Lake of the Woods for two, 4 days on the American Plan which furnishes the cabin, meals, boat etc. Tickets and further information is available on our website.
Finally Craig also mentioned an upcoming chapter outing trip to the Lake of the Woods, September 4th to the 11th. Contact Craig for further information.
Craig has put together another Membership Directory for this year. Any member desiring one should contact Craig, as well as any new members who would desire to be added. Other information about club activities, lake conditions, etc. can be seen on our website or MuskieLink.
April 17th is our annual Lake Kinkaid Clean Up day. We hope everyone will volunteer to help, this is only from 8am until noon and a luncheon will be served at the Marina restaurant afterwards.
Later that same day is our Annual Awards Banquet at the Mississippi Flyway in Carbondale at 6pm An event we hope all members can attend.
Walt Krause filled the last of the meeting by sharing his tips and knowledge about hunting our favorite fish, and concluding with all the little things one does that add up to improved success.
Meeting was adjourned at 6:45 pm.

In attendance were: Jerry & Cheryl Ford, Ken Ryder, Jim Beaty, Steve Burian, John Wright, Walt Krause, Dan & Renee Johnson, Ray Wheelock, and a new member Travis Smith
The meeting opened with discussion concerning club activities and dates for the forthcoming year.
First order of discussion was the Annual Awards Banquet... previous years’ events were compared to various options were presented & debated over the date and type of event to be held. A change of venue was decided upon over past years to try and accommodate as many members as possible, and an earlier date of Feb. 11 date was decided upon. Renee suggested awarding gift certificates in lieu of plaques for member accomplishments, this was discussed. Jim suggested that for recipients for multiple awards be given one plaque with all the dates shown. This was agreed upon and to make Larry Owens aware of this change. Various options for locations followed, and John Wright offered to check into getting a hall in Swansea, to come up with and to prepare the menu for the banquet. Ray Wheelock volunteered to help with this endeavor should it work out. (Please note that since this was worked out). Dan brought up guest speakers. Walt volunteered to do a presentation. Dan & Renee offered to work on a Muskie Trivia game to play with prizes instead of door prizes this year.
Cabin Fever Outing... Discussions as to possible dates, and the option to combine the event with the annual Pomme/ Shawnee Chapter Challenge Jerry volunteered to contact Coach with the Pomme chapter to discuss dates (Mar 24th first choice). Jim volunteered to make contact to rent the Farm House that weekend.
Spring Guide for a Day... March 19th. Jim will also include this event while reserving the Farm House.
Kid’s Fishing Day... Renee would make contact the new representative of the local 4 H Club and confirm a June 2nd date. This is another date Jim would try to reserve the Farm House for the club for June 1st.
Jim suggested a possible new club outing this year, a long weekend trip to Lake St Clair near Detroit. This would be a 2 day trolling event, a trip without our boats or tackle, but instead go out with guides who have all the gear. Jim has offered a stay at his father-in-laws home instead of motel expenses. Anticipated cost per member would be about $400 to $500.
Eagle Lake Outing... Possible April 14th date. This would be the clubs first outing to fish for the Tigers that we have been stocking.
Fall Guide for a Day ... Sept 22nd suggested. Yet another weekend that Jim will try to reserve the Farm House for the club.
Prairie Lake Outing... Suggested Sept 7, 8 , and 9. Lodging or tents to be determined.
Renee suggested we consider a “Wine Tasting Tour” that could be taken by guiding members spouses as well as the guest’s spouses. It was decided it was worth looking into, Renee volunteered to do the research.
Winter meeting at Cabela’s... several dates were suggested, Walt to contact Cabela’s about possible open dates for the conference room. Options included Jan. 28th first choice, Jan. 21st as a second, and Feb. 18th as a third. It was suggested that this meeting could be promoted at the C’ville Let’s Go Fishing Show . Chapter would cover costs for food and beverages. Possible time 5 to 7 pm.
Discussion about the club covering the cost of the Farm House rental for certain events. It was agreed that it would for the Spring & Fall Guide for a Day’s (Fri & Sat each weekend), Kid’s Fishing Day (Friday only), and the Pomme/ Shawnee Chapter Challenge (Fri & Sat).
Discussion over developing a yearly budget proposed by Ray for each committee. After discussion it was the consensus that budgeting was unneeded at this time.
Ken mentioned hearing numerous comments concerning the raffle items and suggested upgrading the type of items offered. Discussion over IMTT’s request to contribute to the suggested IMTT purchase of an insurance policy to add additional prize for catching the first 50 inch fish during a tournament, approx. a $350. Cost to the chapter to cover our three qualifying tournaments, must be a member of the IMTT to qualify ... this expenditure was approved by board.
Miscellaneous discussions: Gil Hamm Chapter challenge and the Pomme / Shawnee Chapter challenge planning, web site domain, hosting, and renewal, and continuing the Tiger stocking program in the future. It was decided to wait until after the Pomme/ Shawnee challenge to order big fish winning team jackets to insure we get the correct sizes... that we will procure these from “Coach” from the Pomme chapter. Finally it was decided to procure additional rods from Tyrant Tackle as awards for the winners of that tournament, as well as other additional rods for the Iron Man Award and to add to our club inventory for tournament raffles in the future.
Our thanks to Steve Burian for hosting the meeting at his home, and to Jerry & Cheryl Ford for obtaining and cooking pizzas for snacks at the meeting.
