Monthly News Letter January 1st, 2012
To the Members of Chapter #28,
Happy New Year. Are you ready for the 2012 muskie season? I am getting my list together for some new tools for this coming year and hope to pick them up at the Chicago show in a couple of weeks. I always refer to lures as tools. You can catch more fish or get the job done right if you use the right tool. One thing I want to stress is that you have to learn to use them correctly. Some times all it takes to get a lure to work properly is in your choice of rod, reel or leader for those particular lures.
I am going to give you a few ideas for lures that you may want to have in your tackle box this coming year. The first is a good selection of older baits. The “Schoolin Shad” and “Hatchet Shad” made by Simms tackle. They have been very productive on Kinkaid the past 2 or 3 years. The 5 inch “Czar” by Tyrant tackle and the “Super Cisco” by Tackle Industries. Do not forget the “SS Shad” by Smoker Tackle and an assortment of Crane baits. All of the above lures have been very good casting lures on Kinkaid. I am not going to get into trolling lures at this time but if you want to know about them, you can call me or talk to me on the lake.
You should have a good selection of glide and pull baits as well. Lures like the “Suick”, “Phantoms”, “Hellhounds” and “Manta’s”. You may have some others to add but these have been very good on Kinkaid.
Some new lures for this year that you might want to consider are the 7 inch “Krisco” by Musky Armor. This lure should be very hot in this smaller size for casting and trolling shallow water. Tyrant Tackle has come out with a bunch of new lures that should catch a lot of muskies. The new “Mathy’s Glider” that is smaller than a standard hellhound and has very bright foil colored sides. They have a new line up of top water baits that should be very good. The “Lola” is similar to the “Low Rider” but has smaller props for a softer sound. The “Haley’s Comet” is smaller than the Musky Buster Mini Humper. The “Navigator” similar to Ty Sennett’s “Stillwater” and the “Spin Jack” is similar to the Musky Buster’s “Top Walker”. An other top water bait that should be looked at is the smaller River2sea “Whopper Plopper”. I caught a lot of big bass and pike on the original “Whopper Plopper” this past year.
In December we had an election of officers and finished up on the calendar of events for 2012. We had a few changes in the officers for this year. John Wright is the new Vice President and Renee Johnson took over as Web Master. We had a few changes in the committees as well. You can view the list on our website.
This year we have assembled a very good calendar of events for 2012. We start with a booth at the Collinsville “Lets Go Fishing Show” This is a very good show to tell the area about our club. Around 10,000 fishermen come through the doors in the three days. We have a meeting at the Cabela’s store at the end of the month. February we have a booth at the Southern Illinois Fishing and Boating Show in Marian, Illinois. They claim to have 10.000 go through the doors at this show but I think they estimate the number high. We will have our Awards Dinner in the middle of the month. I could go on and on but I think you get the fell for the events. The complete calendar will be on our website. I am excited about this year and I hope you will be also. This is your club and you only get out of it what you put in. We have very good muskie fisherman in the club that you can learn a thing or two. I can safely say we have more State Champions come from our club than any other muskie club in Illinois.
The other event that was held in December was the weekend trolling outing. I did not attend but I understand that a few members did brave the cold temperatures. I heard that 4 muskies were caught and that Steve Burian’s boat caught two of the four fish.
Ken Ryder has informed me that the Tyrant rods are in. If you had ordered a rod through the club, you can call Ken to make arrangements to pick them up. His number is: (618) 917-1664.
I know this is quite early but we have received the information on the Chapter Challenge. Next years challenge will be held on Lake of the Woods August 29, 30 and 31. It will be held at the Red Wing Lodge. Jim Beaty has taken the lead and has reserved a cabin at Red Wing for our club. The dates of the cabin will be from August 25th to September 1st. I put this in now incase some of you need to put in for vacation. I do have some numbers to think about. The estimated cost will be $325 per person based on 6 people. Launch fee is $16 if you put it in and out or $24 if you have them do it. The docking fee is $75 a boat for the week. With you and your partner sharing the fees for launch and docking it would be about $49.50. One thing to remember is the exchange rate might make it higher or lower and fuel cost of about $100 a person. Food cost the last couple of trips have been about $75 for the week. I will have more information as we get closer to the challenge in August.
Craig Moser has a 2009 40 hp Honda for sale. If you are looking for a 40 hp engine, you can contact him at (314) 894-4748.
Here are the activities for the next two months:
January 6, 7 and 8th Collinsville “Let’s Go Fishing Show”. We will have a booth again at the show and Ken and I would like to have volunteers to help with the booth. Think about
helping out and talk muskie fishing. Call me at 618-972-5584 to set up a time to work the booth. I have tickets for those that work the booth. Show hours are Friday noon to 9 pm, Saturday 9 am to 7 pm and Sunday 10 am to 5 pm. We are very light on Friday after 5 and any time on Saturday. Friday there is a muskie seminar at 4:45 in the Marquette conference room and Sunday at 12:30 introduction to Muskie Fishing in the Marquette conference room.
January 13, 14 and 15th. Chicago Muskie Show, Harper College. There will be an IMA meeting at the show on Saturday morning and followed with an IMTT meeting. Both of these meeting are open to you.
January 29th Winter meeting at the Hazelwood Cabela’s store 1 Pm. Cabela’s has again allowed us to hold the meeting in their seminar room back by the shoe department.
February 3rd, 4th & 5th Southern Illinois Boat and Fishing Show at the Pavilion, Marion, Illinois. We will have a booth at this show and can always use help at the booth. Hours of this show are Friday 4 pm to 7 pm, Saturday 9 am to 6 pm and Sunday 10 am to 3 pm. There is no charge to get in to this show.
February 11 Shawnee Muskie Hunters Awards Dinner at the Norman Lehr Center located in Mel Price Park Swansea, Illinois
I think that is it for this month. I hope to see you on the water. If you ever want to know about the fishing conditions on Kinkaid, you can always call me on my cell and I will give you what I know.
Remember I’m in the other Lund.
